What Are the Key Things to Look for In A Day Care Centre?

Posted on

Finding a place to leave your kid when you have no one else to watch over him or her can be quite difficult. There are many established family day care centres where your child can receive the care he or she needs when you are not able to do it yourself, perhaps because of your job or other obligations. However, not all of them are the same. Finding the ideal day care centre for your child will require you to consider components such as the charges, the location and their policies when it comes to child care and development. Therefore, since the decision to select one may not always be easy, especially if it's your first time, here are some tips to help you.

Ask About the Operating Hours

When choosing day care centres based on the operating hours, full-day and half-day day care centres are the major options you will come across. Therefore, you need to evaluate your needs and choose one that will best suit your lifestyle. For instance, if you leave for work until later in the day, a full-day day care centre will be the ideal option. Half-day day care centres are usually a good idea for spouses or partners with different working shifts. Your spouse can pick up your kid from the day care centre when you are at work.

However, it's worth noting that you can also consider casual child care centres. These types of child care centres are designed to look after your kid for short periods, usually just a few hours. You may need to attend to an emergency and taking your child with you could be an inconvenience for both of you. Whatever errand you have to run, casual child care centres will give your child the care he or she needs. That way, you don't have to spend more on a half-day centre when you only need a few hours.

Consider the Ratio of Staff to The Kids

Be extra keen on the how many kids one member of staff handles. This will tell you whether your kid will get all the attention he or she deserves. Kids at day care age require the most attention to ensure their safety as well as health. Therefore, choose a day care centre with the lowest staff-to-kids ratio.

Think About Age Grouping/Separation

Find out how kids are grouped at the day care centre when selecting one for your child. It's imperative that kids are separated according to their age groups in order to promote a safe playing environment.
